Hormones, DHT, Oestrogen and Common Hair Loss Triggers
Hair loss in women is a common concern, affecting millions at different stages of life. Female hair loss can be caused by a combination of hormonal changes, genetics, lifestyle factors and underlying health conditions. Understanding the causes of hair thinning in women is essential for finding the right treatment and preventing further hair loss.
One of the leading causes of hair loss in women is hormonal imbalance. Hormones regulate the hair growth cycle, and fluctuations can disrupt normal growth. Oestrogen plays a crucial role in keeping hair thick, strong and in its active growth phase. When oestrogen levels fall — during menopause, after pregnancy, or due to medical conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) — women may notice increased shedding and thinning hair.
Another major contributor to female pattern hair loss is DHT (dihydrotestosterone). DHT is a hormone derived from testosterone and is a primary cause of androgenetic alopecia in women. If hair follicles are genetically sensitive to DHT, the hormone can cause them to shrink over time, leading to progressively finer hair and reduced density. This typically results in thinning at the crown or a widening part rather than complete baldness.
Stress-related hair loss is also extremely common. Physical stress, emotional stress, illness or major life events can trigger telogen effluvium, a condition where hair enters the resting phase prematurely and sheds excessively several months later.
Nutritional deficiencies are another important factor. Low iron levels, vitamin D deficiency, inadequate protein intake and B vitamin deficiencies can all contribute to hair loss in women. Additionally, thyroid disorders are well-known causes of diffuse hair thinning.
Finally, hair styling damage, including tight hairstyles, excessive heat styling and chemical treatments, can weaken hair and cause traction alopecia.
